If I Knew Then What I Know Now – Part 9

This morning as I delved into God’s Word seeking to know Jesus in a new way, the word “vine” kept resonating in my heart. I realized a vine grows around an object and gives it strength and protection. I always envisioned Jesus as a tree and me as a branch. The thought of being a branch makes me feel vulnerable and exposed. Branches can easily be damaged or even cut off. Being an object around which the Vine gently grows feels safe and secure, like a heavenly hug. We are the objects of God’s affections; He envelops us in His holy love.

We grow as the Vine encases us in His loving embrace. There may be a feeling of pressing, and resistance may arise on our part as the Gardener gently applies His pruning shears to clear away the weeds so further growth can take place. The Vine is transforming our hearts and renewing our minds to desire His holy ways. He is weaving Himself (The Word) into our hearts. His love penetrating, redeeming our souls and healing our wounds.

The design for earthly marriage is much the same. Marriage was created to be protection from the elements, a refuge from the world, a safe place, a place where the uniqueness of God’s children can be cultivated and allowed to bloom. Our lives are hidden in the Vine. We must pursue Him to unwrap our heavenly purpose (the very purpose for which we were created). Jesus is the bond that holds us together, the wellspring of Life that bubbles up from the depths of our souls, causing us to walk in forgiveness and love. Jesus is the Vine that entangles us in His care as we yield to His gentle touch. He is the true vine, and His Father is the Gardener (John 15:1 NIV).
